Arts Office eNews:: April 2013

Rain or shine, April is a busy month filled with lots of creative activities happening both indoors and out!  Highlights include the North Shore Writers Festival and the North Shore Art Crawl. Visit the ON! calendar for event details and find out what else is happening in your 'hood' in the coming weeks.

In this month's Artist Among Us column, you'll find out what DNV staffer Geoff Hill loves to dive into after hours! And, there's an update on North Shore Culture Days and an invitation to an INFO+IDEAS session for North and West Vancouver individual artists, groups and businesses interested in getting involved in the Culture Days celebrations this September.

    By day, you'll find Geoff Hill immersed in his work in the Stores Department at the District of North Vancouver. But once he gets home, he immerses himself in something entirely different! Working with clay has been Geoff's artistic passion for the past few years. "Molding and glazing is something that I find a lot of peace in and I hope to continue to work with clay for many years to come."

    North Shore Culture Days returns September 27, 28, 29, 2013 and we're laying plans for another year of creative activities stretching from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay. The Arts Office will host a North Shore Culture Days INFO+IDEAS session on Monday April 29th, 2-4pm at the Lynn Valley Library Community Room. Artists, cultural and heritage groups, culinary artists, hotels, restaurants, and anyone else interested in hosting a Culture Days event is invited. North Shore Culture Days is a wonderful opportunity to inspire, enthrall, and engage with the community. And above all, it can be alot of FUN!

    A few years ago, students from Queensbury Elementary School in the City of North Vancouver worked with artist Eric Neighbour to transform a 300-year old red cedar stump into a unique and educational play structure. The Queensbury Frog project was supported through the Community Public Art Program administered by the Arts Office. The next application deadline for Community Public Art Projects is April 30, 2013.

    April showers will not be dampening the spirits of North Shore culture seekers this weekend. There's lots to choose from thanks to a couple of well established and growing creative collaborations between North Shore libraries and amongst local visual artists and galleries. The 14th Annual North Shore Writers Festival takes place at the Lynn Valley District Public Library on April 19 and 20. And, the 3rd Annual North Shore Art Crawl happens in creative spaces and studios from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay, April 20 and 21. Why not check out both?

    In 2012,  internationally recognized artist Douglas Coupland, was honoured to receive the FANS Distinguished Artist Award from representatives of the District and City of North Vancouver and West Vancouver District. The Fund for the Arts on the North Shore (FANS)  provides grants for up and coming North Shore artists, and to recognize outstanding artistic achievement of established North Shore artists. The deadline for nominations for the FANS 2013 Distinguished Artist Award is April 29, 2013.
