Arts Office eNews:: June 2012

Summer has (finally!) arrived on Vancouver's North Shore, and with summer comes a great line up of music, markets, festivals and community celebrations. This month we shine our Artists Among Us spotlight on a talented District of North Vancouver staffer. Plus, there's lots of spectacular new Public Art for us to boast about, and our monthly update on North Shore Culture Days includes a Call for Participants!

  • Rod Man with the District of North Vancouver's Survey Department for the past five years, Ryan Matches finds on-the-job inspiration every day for his own photography and art . Whether he's working on the streets, in the woods, or along shorelines, he finds the the visual stimulation to be amazing and manages to snap a few quick pictures on his iPhone for future painting reference, or just for the beautiful photographic content!

  • Public Artists bring unique visions to a city that reflect, engage and challenge the image of its surroundings and its people. The City of North Vancouver's revitalized City Hall includes a number of new public art works each with its own special story.  Pictured above is the artwork entitled 35 Rings by Antonio Millares III and Jeremy Crowle. Flanking the main atrium stairs, the work reflects the history of the City of North Vancouver in a timeline of metaphorical tree rings.

  • This summer, two of the North Shore's biggest and best festivals will welcome music lovers and revellers from all corners of Metro Vancouver to join in the fun. Now entering it's 10th year, the North Shore Jazz Festival kicks off June 22 through July 1. Caribbean Days celebrates its 25th anniversary July 28 and 29.

  • Located at the entrance to Lynnmouth Park and connected to the Spirit Trail, North Vancouver's newly re-opened Mountain Equipment Co-op unveiled a beautiful work of public art entitled Swale in a public ceremony this month. MEC partnered with the City of North Vancouver to commission artists Veronica and Edwin Dam de Nogales, the same artists that created The Long Ascent, the horse art work located in Victoria Park on Lonsdale Avenue.

  • Back by popular demand, the City of North Vancouver has announced the second annual Concerts in the Square series and Art on the Pier market returning to Shipbuilders’ Square at the Shipyards. These Saturday afternoon events will include musical entertainment and dancing for all to enjoy. An added attraction this summer will be a Strawberry Tea Concert on August 26th.

  • North Shore Culture Days is part of a national movement to raise the awareness, accessibility and participation of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. Arts and cultural organizations, libraries, community centres, artists, schools and creative sector businesses are invited to participate in a free North Shore Culture Days promotional campaign that will include a special North Shore Culture Days Map & Guide to be included in the September 28th issue of the North Shore News. It's free and easy!
