Arts Office eNews:: March 2012

On Vancouver's North Shore, creative work is always in process. Here at the Arts Office, we're immersed in the creation of a new Cultural Plan for North Vancouver and gearing up for next month's World Café event.

In this month's Artists Among Us series we meet more talented staff members at the City and District of North Vancouver. And in the creative community, the wheels are turning as we lay plans for a North Shore-wide Culture Days celebration this Fall.

  • Work on a new Cultural Plan for North Vancouver is now in full swing! A key component of the process will be a World Café at Presentation House Arts Centre on April 12th. A broad spectrum of the community will come together to help refine objectives and priorities for a new Cultural Plan that will guide the development of arts and culture in the City and District of North Vancouver over the course of the next 10+ years.

  • A student of science and architecture with a great affinity towards the arts, Sanjoy Das' knowledge of different artistic mediums informs his work as an Assistant Plan Checker with the City of North Vancouver each and every day. Sanjoy's lifelong love of drawing and painting provides him with a deep source of inspiration both on and off the job!

  • A member of the District of North Vancouver's Communications team, David Carson loves to write. It's that simple. Whether it's about an up-and-coming hockey player, goalie blunders, or a new District sustainability initiative, it’s the process of transferring thoughts and images from his head to the page that really gets him going.

  • This Fall, North Shore arts, culture, heritage groups, libraries and rec centres will open their doors as part of the cross-Canada Culture Days celebrations. North Shore residents of all ages will be invited to venture behind-the-scenes to experience the world of visual and performing artists, historians, writers and more! Hands-on, interactive and free - everyone will be encouraged to discover something new and different during Culture Days that will connect them with their own creativity and their community!

  • The North Shore Light Opera Society adds a madcap twist to their upcoming production of Gilbert & Sullivan's classic operetta The Mikado. Audiences will be transported to 'retro ladies night' at The Mikado Cabaret, a renowned karaoke nightspot where the bar staff decide to put on a floorshow like no other! And if that's not madcap enough, NSLOS invites G&S diehard fans to join in and raise their voices at a special 'Sing Along Mikado' matinee on May 2nd!
