Civic Public Art

Public Art not only invests a space with “place making” qualities and culture, it has the capacity to interpret the historic, social, cultural and narrative nuances that distinguish our neighbourhoods and create a true sense of place.

North Vancouver believes that public art enhances the quality and ambiance of the municipality’s built environment, and to that end, Municipal Council approved its Civic Public Art Program in 2000. Now ten years later, the benefits of this endorsement can not only be seen through an impressive and growing civic art collection but also through an ever expanding inventory of works commissioned by developers.

Successful public art programs help communities develop and express their unique sense of place and character, which in turn, draws tourism and investment activity to the region. By taking the lead at the Council level, a powerful message was sent to the development community which has included a significant number of public art inclusions in local private developments.
