Arts Office eNews:: December 2011

The holiday season is filled with an abundance of creative activities to share with friends and family. Whether it's a holiday sing-a-long, one of the zany pantomimes appearing on local stages, or the sweet sounds of neighbourhood buskers, there are many ways to get in the spirit!

In this year end issue of Arts Office eNews, we discover a couple of talented municipal musicians in our continuing Artists Among Us series, learn of a special Christmas Fairy Tale, introduce the Lynn Valley Village Busking Program, and share award winning news from the Arts Office.

Tis' the season to be jolly and we hope that your holidays are just that!  So, from all of us here at the Arts Office we extend to you our best wishes for a joyful holiday season and inspiring New Year!

  • Kyler Storm - Singer, Photographer, GIS Analyst

    The commonalities between singing, photography and GIS analysis may not be apparent at first glance, but for Kyler Storm, each of these activities requires logical and analytical concentration, while at the same time, they all work best with an artistic and creative approach.

    Having worked as at GIS Analyst with the District for the past four years, Kyler has had some time to reflect on how his work and art practices intersect.

  • Al Lynch - Musician and NSRP Manager

    Lead singer and trumpet player with the classic rock band Wager, Al Lynch knows a thing or two about public performance. In fact, Al's passion for music has been instrumental (pun intended!) in preparing him for public presentations to municipal councils and community groups that he makes on a regular basis as Manager of the North Shore Recycling Program.

    Al's group Wager, a 60's and 70's rock and R&B cover band, has been around for more than 25 years. Prior to joining Wager, Al was a founding member of the Rhythm & Blues Allstars, one of the most popular bands in the Greater Vancouver area in the late 1970's.

On December 13th, with the support of companions, co-workers, students from the local Waldorf School, and a Community Art Project Grant from the Arts Office, Cascadia will present Fairy Tale Christmas, a musical based on the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

  • The Arts Office was thrilled to learn that its logo and website icons placed first in the Regional Design Awards produced by Design Edge Canada magazine, a trade publication that reaches the largest audience of professional graphic designers in Canada. Created by designers Angela Hot and David Coates of ION Branding + Design, these quirky images have made it possible for the Arts Office to put a fun and funky new face on North Vancouver's bi-municipal agency for arts and culture.

  • Students from Ross Road School are busking up a storm in Lynn Valley Village this month to raise funds for a school trip to Quebec in the new year. Busking is a well established form of street performance and a wonderful way to animate public spaces. In recognition of this popular art form, the Arts Office has created the Lynn Valley Village Busking Program for artists interested in sharing their talents with the local community and earning a few bucks in the process!

  • Peer Assessment represents one of the Arts Office's most important core values. In order to decide who will receive funding and how much, the Arts Office is guided by recommendations received through a peer jury review. The Arts Office seeks out individuals that are familiar with arts and culture on the North Shore, and that will bring to the table knowledge and experience in different fields of artistic and creative practice.
