Arts Office eNews:: June 2013

June is here and we have lots of creative north shore news to share! There's a spectacular new community public art mural to boast about; info on an inspiring artist-led walk in the forest; and, our monthly update on North Shore Culture Days includes a Call for Participation! We shine the Artists Among Us spotlight on a talented Box Office Assistant at CapU's NSCU Theatre; and we help spread the news about the North Shore Celtic Ensemble's special concert in Shipbuilder's Square happening later this month.

Do you have a North Shore arts-related story to tell? Email details to Barb McLean and we'll do our best to include it in an upcoming issue of the Arts Office eNews.

  • North Shore Culture Days is a three-day celebration of arts, culture and creativity that happens September 27, 28 & 29, 2013.  Local artists, arts and cultural groups and creative organizations invite the community to participate in FREE "hands-on" and "behind the scenes" activities.  It's a tri-municipal undertaking coordinated by the North Vancouver Arts Office with support from the District of West Vancouver, Vancouver North Shore Tourism Association, City and District Libraries, and the NV Rec Commission.

  • Celebrating community through the arts is a favourite subject for the students and staff at Sherwood Park Elementary, a diverse school located in the Seymour/Dollarton/Deep Cove area of North Vancouver.  At a special ceremony last month, the school unveiled 'Celebrating Our Community', a colourful 6-panel mural created by the students under the direction of local artist Meghan Leeburn.  Tsleil-Waututh students from the school blessed the mural with ceremonial cedar boughs and then joined their fellow students to perform a special song that they had composed to recognize this historic event!

But before they hit the road, North Shore audiences will get a chance to say 'bon voyage' at a FREE concert in Shipbuilders’ Square on June 22nd, 7-9pm where NSCE will launch their newest CD, Troubadours!

Stationed at the Heritage Centre at the entrance to Mount Seymour Provincial Park, the Society offers a wide range of arts-related outreach programs for seniors, as well as events designed to appeal to nature lovers of all ages. Their upcoming Inspirational Walk Through the Forest on June 24th with local artist Janna Kumi is an opportunity for aspiring or established artists to interpret and transfer the colours, shapes and smells of nature to canvas.

  • Preparing for the launch of her first full length CD, Beth Southwell knows a thing or two about the challenges of establishing a career as a performing artist. By day, Beth works as a Box Office Assistant at the North Shore Credit Union Centre for Performing Arts at Capilano University. After hours, she devotes her artistic energy to singing and songwriting and will launch her first full length CD at a special concert later this month. According to Beth, "hard work, a positive attitude, and above all, a passion for the arts is what it takes to make it in the biz!"
