Tis' the Season for Creative Sustainability!

Buying local, upcycling and healthy lifestyles are just some of the sustainable practices that consumers are embracing more and more each day. In this month's Artists Among Us series you'll learn about the environmentally friendly activities of two highly creative North Vancouver municipal staffers.

We also include some creative and sustainable gift giving ideas for the upcoming holiday season. Consider applying the '100 Mile' concept to your Christmas shopping list and give the gift of a live show or concert, a one-of-kind craft, or an original piece of art. You'll be buying local and supporting North Shore artists in the process!

Think of the on! event calendar as your environmentally friendly shopping resource any time of the year! At the Arts Office, we make it our goal to promote as many North Shore events as possible in the on! calendar, and through Twitter and Facebook.

There's lots of creative activity to get you in the spirit!

  • Heather Dunn:  Ballroom Dancer + NV Rec Centre Cashier

Sharing her passion for dance is what Heather Dunn does best...both on and off the dance floor! Over the past eleven years as a cashier at various North Van Rec Centres, Heather has drawn on her own dance experience to encourage others to try something new, emphasizing the fact that you're never too old to learn!

  • Denise Corcoran - Creative 'Upcycler' + Web Content Specialist

When she's not managing the City of North Vancouver's website and Facebook page, Denise channels her creative energy into 'upcycling' for her Thrifty by Design sideline and ends up with lots of fun stuff on the cheap!

  • See it, love it, buy it...and then find out who the artist is! The 7th Annual Anonymous Art Show opens at CityScape Community Art Space on Thursday November 24 at 7pm sharp! This popular group exhibition and fundraiser for the North Vancouver Community Arts Council showcases original works by a wide range of emerging and established artists.

  • In addition to being one of BC's best young performing arts groups, the North Shore Celtic Ensemble is fully committed to supporting and strengthening community ties in partnership with others. NSCE's Community Concert Series allows talented young musicians the opportunity to interact at a profound level while sharing their exuberant and spirited music with others.

  • In their continuing efforts to build an art education legacy for the children of British Columbia, the Artists for Kids Trust (AFK) provides a wealth of art enrichment programs in schools and the community. Finding the resources that will enable them to deliver programs is one of the creative challenges that the organization rises to every year!

  • As the holiday season approaches and you're faced with having to find the perfect thing for those 'tough to buy for' loved ones, consider the gift of a live cultural experience, an original piece of art, or a one-of-a-kind craft work. Buy local and support North Shore artists in the process.
